Q: On A-11 for one student the right eye moves in and the left eye moves out when the ball comes in close to the face. Both eyes move to the left when the ball is in and then return back to center when ball is pulled back. Observation for teaming A-13 showed that the student saw two strings for green and red but only one for yellow. When the red lens was put on the right eye for A-S, student could only read the red letters. When the red lens was reversed and on the left eye, student could only read the white letters. The other student could not see two strings for the red bead and when the red lens was on the right eye, the student could only read red letters. Only white letters when reversed. What recommendations should I follow for teaming exercises? A: Follow the "No Teaming" exercises and be sure to include doing FS 5 right away. After each student has completed replications of FS 5, try the glasses on again to see if the eyes are more in control. If not, continue on with original plan. The idea is to strengthen eye movement skills and checking several times along the way is recommended.
Q: During a screening, one of my students scored a 20/30 on his right eye, 20/300 on is left eye, and his combined vision is 20/30. Am I correct in assuming he has to wait to start Bridges until he gets new glasses?
A: Yes, this student should be examined by an optometrist. If he has glasses and was recently examined – did he wear them during your evaluation? Be sure to dialogue with the school nurse and perhaps she can refer him to an optometrist. As long as his vision is 20/30 combined he is able to start in the lab.
Q: We have a student ready for FS 2. She cannot read the whole chart as she can only see red with them right side up and white with the upside down. Do we just go ahead and have her read the chart like that or does she need her eyes checked. She wears glasses. On her assessment she had 3-2-1 on A-13.
A: Bridges is always cautious regarding a child that cannot see the full chart. At this point stop anything with the red/green glasses, the Brock String, or the Hart Chart. Write "delay" next to those three. Have this student start the 4 corner-sighting target and any other exercises in FS that do not include the "delayed ones". After successful completions of the targets and banners, let this student try the red/green glasses again. If he/she can see the letters then move forward with the plan. If he/she cannot see all of the letters then please let me know. Q: I was giving the Form L assessment to several students. While I was giving directions for the MSU auditory section, one of my students decided it would be great to finish the NST-III section while I was not looking. I know he got at least 2 lines finished before I stopped him so I am not sure how to score this section. A: Given the time frame he was afforded for the NST III, score the subtest as a normal assessment. The reasoning behind this is that the norming of the assessment is a failsafe that will not dramatically increase the score to another stanine.
Q: We received the two new "letter balls" that we ordered, but they do NOT have letters on them. How do you do FS-7, where the students are to track the letters as the ball turns. Do they just watch the ball as it goes around?
A: As far as the exercise FS-7, the activity remains the same and purpose is intact. Have the student focus on the ball. Q: Is there an answer booklet for FS Primary? A: No answer sheet is included for FS Primary.
